"Just f*** the rest"
In many ways, I am just like Dwayne Hoover from Little Miss Sunshine.
But to qualify, applicants must meet certain academic, physical, and medical requirements. Believing that I met most of the academic goals, I just needed to focus on my physical strength and endurance. After becoming so unhealthy during the pandemic last year, I decided to spend a lot of time training in the gym and doing pull-ups in my room at home during the summer (like Dwayne did in the movie). Whenever I found progress in my training, I became excited; I could see myself closer to achieving my dreams.
However, just like Dwayne is medically disqualified from USAFA because he is color blind, I realized not too long ago that I am too but for a different reason. A more stupid reason. Perhaps the stupidest reason out there possible: peanut allergy. Because the military service provides members with only limited food, peanut allergy is an immediate medical disqualification for people seeking to join the Air Force. That entire week, I felt utterly sick and did not eat anything.
This realization happened months ago, but even to this day, I feel devastated thinking about how my greatest dream in life is officially crushed. For many months, I tried to find alternative routes in my life, talking to my parents over and over again about my future careers and goals. But after watching the movie, there is one particular line that strongly resonates in my heart from Dwayne, and it goes "If I want to fly, then I will find a way to fly. You do what you love and f*** the rest."
I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I find this quote from him amusingly powerful. I always wanted to join the Air Force because I wanted to fly and reach my physical and mental limits, but I can still do that without joining the Air Force.
No way I'm letting my peanut allergy ruin my entire life.
